Mold Growing on Walls and Floor of a Closet in a Home If you ever suffer damages due to a Water Heater leak, call SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista

Water Heaters can be a very common cause of water damage and cause mold growth.  It's common for us to deal with Water Heater leaks and many times, they are a slow leak, just enough to slowly get drywall damp or wet, then the framing and if left too long, mold will start to grow very quickly.

Please note the location of your Water Heater and the walls around it.  The picture of the mold is from a Water Heater that was leaking for quite some time in a closet that backed up too many other rooms.  The result of this water heater leak not being discovered for quite some time is many rooms had water damage and mold.

Never ignore any Water Heater leaks, even a very small amount of water can cause a lot of damage over time.

If you ever find your Water Heater has been leaking and caused damages, call us.  We know just how to repair and prevent any more damages from happening.

Have you suffered Water Damages?

Step 1, educate yourself about the Classes and Categories of Water Damages.

Classes of Water Damage

    • Class 1 damage involves part of a room that has absorbed little moisture. It’s the least level of damage.
    • Class 2 damage has affected an entire room and has absorbed into carpeting and walls.
    • Class 3 damage has absorbed up into the walls, saturated most of the area, and may have come through the ceiling. Class 3 damage is considered the worst.
    • Class 4 damage requires specialty drying due to damage done to materials such as hardwood, stone, and concrete.

Categories of Water Damage

    • Category 1 involves damage from a clean water source such as toilet tanks, broken pipes supplying clean water. Category 1 water damage can degrade into category 2 or 3 if it sits too long.
    • Category 2  involves damage from “grey water,” such as washing machine or dishwasher water containing detergents. It may also involve water containing urine from toilet overflows.
    • Category 3 involves completely unsanitary water that can easily cause illness, disease, or death. Category 3 water comes from sewage, river flooding, and standing water that has begun growing bacteria and other microbes.

Grey scale picture of water droplets on glass looking out If you ever suffer Storm Damage, call SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista, we are available 24/7, including Holidays

So far our winter in the Reno, Truckee, and Tahoe area has been fairly mild.   If you haven't already you still have time to plan for stormwater runoff.  We all know the worst happens when we get a cold storm, lots of snow and then a warmer storm comes with lots of rain.  The result, a lot of snowmelt and water runoff.

Stormwater runoff is one of the top causes of flooded crawl spaces, flooded basements, and flooded houses.  You want to look around and ask yourself when it snows and or rains, or worse yet, snows than then rains, where is the water going to go?

Make sure all of your gutters are cleaned out and the water is going to flow away from your house.  If you have sump pumps in a basement, make sure they are all in good working order and are ready to pump out the water.

We hope you never suffer a flooded crawl space or basement or home, but if you do call SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista.  We have been servicing the Reno, Truckee, and Tahoe areas for over 10 years and will take care of you and get you back to normal, ASAP!

Wood Floor With Water Damage Avoid Water Damage and Mold, After Fall Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts Out

One of the best ways you can prepare for winter and winter storms in the Reno, Truckee, and Tahoe area is to clean out your gutters after the fall leaves have fallen.  Especially if you live in the Truckee and Tahoe areas that have pine needles stacking up on your roof and gutters.  Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause water to pool up against your building or home. When water is not where it's supposed to be, this is when damages are incurred.  Mold can start to grow even in cold weather.  We always have Customers that are shocked by how much mold can grow in low temperatures.  There are many types of mold and some like it hot and some don't mind the cool temperatures at all.   Bottom line if you have a damp structure, if, given the time, mold will find it.   This Fall, remember, to avoid any unnecessary water damages or mold growth make sure your gutters and downspouts are ready to remove the water away from your structure and take it to where it's supposed to flow.  If you do suffer any water damage or mold, call us, we are your Reno, Truckee, and Tahoe water damage and mold experts.

Steps to Take to Winterize Your Tahoe Home

9/22/2019 (Permalink)

Picture of home with snow piled all around it Winterize your Tahoe home to avoid any water damages during the winter or spring.

Is your Tahoe vacation home going to be vacant much of the winter?

Below are some steps that can help to make sure your home is ready to be vacant for the winter.

1. Set thermostat to around 50 - 55 degrees or so to prevent pipes from freezing.

2. Shut off the water at the main shut off valve in your house. The last thing you want to come back to next spring is a flooded home from a leaky or burst pipe. Open up all your faucets and drain your toilets of water — also keep the faucets open to prevent pressure buildup from the little bit of water that remains in your pipes. This will help prevent a burst pipe as the water expands with changing temperatures.

3. Turn off your gas line to prevent a gas leak or other gas-related incident.

4. Bundle the house uptight! Put storm windows on, close shutters, secure plywood over windows, store all outside décor or furniture indoors for the season, too. Make sure that all the windows are closed and locked. Check each one because any open window even a tiny crack can let snow and rain into your home.

5. Unplug everything. Not only will this save you money as your unused appliances will not be using phantom energy, but it also protects the house from an appliance shorting out and causing a fire or a surge of energy ruining your appliances.

6. Check your sump pump. Make sure it functions properly. A wet basement will make for a bad start to next season's fun!

7. Close the damper or flue on your fireplace. This will prevent snow, rain or animals from finding a way into your home.

8. Double-check your gutters. Don't leave the gutters clogged. Drain spouts should be secured to take heavy rain and snowmelt away from your house.

9. Clean out your fridge and pantry of all perishable items. Unplug it and be sure to keep the door to your refrigerator and freezer open to prevent mold and mildew.

If your Tahoe home suffers water damages we are your Tahoe home experts to call!  We service from Truckee to all of North Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas.  We are available 24/7 to service all your water emergencies, 775 747 2800.

Recently we had a Customer that was told by another Restoration company that they had to use his company, as he is already working with their insurance company.  If any Contractor tells you that you have to work with them, that you don't have a choice, this is NOT accurate information.  The Contractor you use is YOUR choice, Insurance can not and does not dictate the Contractor you use.  Unfortunately, there are Contractors out there that use scare tactics or they try to get you to sign paperwork immediately.  Be very cautious of anyone that tells you you have to use their services or insists that you sign anything very quickly.  When you  hire a restoration company for your Fire and or  Water damage, take your time, do your homework.   You will have to work with that Contractor for quite sometime.  And most important, don't let anyone tell you you don't have a choice of Contractor.  You do!  At SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista we work with all Insurance Companies, we will represent you and your needs.  Call us at 775 747 2800.

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is sometimes easy to see, and sometimes it hides.

We are frequently asked how to know if Mold may be present?

Just how much water is needed to grow mold?

The EPA offers some great information on this subject.

According to the EPA, the following questions will provide insight if Mold might be present:

• Is there existing moisture problems in the building?

• Have building materials been wet more than 48 hours?

• Are there hidden sources of water or is the humidity too high (high enough to cause condensation)?

• Are building occupants reporting musty or moldy odors?

• Are building occupants reporting health problems?

• Are building materials or furnishings visibly damaged?

• Has maintenance been delayed or the maintenance plan been altered?

• Has the building been recently remodeled or has building use changed?

• Is consultation with medical or health professionals indicated?

We work with Industrial Hygienists that will test to find out exactly what is in your property.  If it's Mold our professional, IICRC trained Team knows the most current and best practices to clean it up and restore your property back to normal.  Call us for all your Mold Remediation needs.

How Do I Prepare For a Storm In Nevada

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Storms in Nevada can be a daunting thing; we get such extreme weather here that the unique challenges our geography and climate present us with can complicate our preparation efforts when storms hit.

According to Ready.gov, the best first steps you can take no matter where you are, are to set up emergency alerts on your phone and stay informed! Knowing the difference between "watches" and "warnings" is also imperative:

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch - Tells you when and where severe thunderstorms are likely to occur. Watch the sky and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television for information.

  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Issued when severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property to those in the path of the storm.

Firstly: you can expect high winds to down power lines here in the Reno/Sparks area, and in more residential parts of the Tahoe/Truckee area. This means services like internet, phone and television may be unavailable until the line is fixed. Do NOT touch a downed pole or line, or attempt to drive over them, or interact with them in anyway. Instead, alert authorities to the downed line, and never drive through flooded areas.

Second: We mentioned flooded areas; parts of Nevada (like Reno and Sparks) are in what is referred to locally as "the valley". This means that much of the rain and melt-water we get "up in the mountains" (think Mt. Rose!) trickles down, fills our flood drains, raises the Truckee river's water level, and potentially floods our streets. That's right; weather in the mountains very quickly becomes our problem down here. So, stay away from flood waters, and "turn around, don't drown!". Flash floods are common here, but casualties shouldn't be!

Third: High winds don't just affect communications around here, they also can cause power outages. We experience these with some regularity, but for a visitor or someone thinking of moving to the area, a power outage can be a jarring experience. Make sure you have a separate power bank to charge your devices from handy, restock your emergency supply kit, and ensure your car's gas-tank is full (gas stations use electricity to dispense fuel; if you don't have electricity, they likely don't either, so if you don't have gas, you can't get it from them!).

During the power outage be sure to stay calm, don't use candles as emergency lighting (fire hazard!), and keep informed with NOAA's safety tips and alerts.

Caughlin Ranch Fire: A Personal Look Back

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

A few years ago, Caughlin Ranch caught fire in Reno, Nevada. Some lauded it as the "worst fire in Reno history". The day is November 18, 2011. It is a cold, windy day, but the wind only worsened the already burning issue at Caughlin Ranch. 9,500 people are being evacuated from the area. Smoke rises from the side of a charred mountain. Embers smolder in the underbrush. Sirens fill the air, and joining the red fire trucks is a brigade of bright green vehicles, heading in after them. One career and technical school--called the Academy of Arts, Careers, and Technology (AACT), had to suspend classes for the day, due to a significant amount of their students from the zoned school in the Caughlin Ranch area being unable to attend. An administrative staff member records a message for each student's household, and sends it out. Phones ring. Andrea picks up and hears the news; that classes have been cancelled, that Monday will be an 'A' day, and the schools thoughts were with the victims of the fire. She recalls: "Yeah, it was a day off, sure, but I was afraid for my friends the entire time," Andrea says, "but knowing that six years later, I'd be working with the people who helped get my friends' homes back together is beyond wild to me." Andrea, who goes by Andi now, works as SERVPRO's Marketing Support Coordinator. She wrote this article, and was delighted to share her story.

Water and Flood Damage In Truckee

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

All the storms this winter are going to cause a lot of flooding this Spring.

According to the Sierra Sun, "much of Northern Nevada set a record for precipitation this past water year, more than doubling the average in some areas," which means SERVPRO has been exceptionally busy with cleaning up water damaged buildings, homes, offices, and vehicles. In addition, the Mount Rose Snowline is moving uphill, meaning more liquid precipitation, and less of that precipitation falling as snow. Sad news for snowboarders, and anyone with property they'd rather keep dry. Chris Smallcomb from the National Weather Service's Reno office stated that "due to the previous record-breaking year and recent rains, the ground is saturated and flooding would occur more easily now." What you can expect from wetter conditions in a valley like Reno is snow-melt and runoff to damage foundations or soak lawns and fill up sidewalk drains. From the Truckee and Tahoe areas, you can expect that meltwater and runoff to reach your property first, and likely be the coldest. Much of it also comes in the form of rain, so you are more likely to have damage before anyone else in the valley does, since the Reno and Sparks areas have to wait for the snow and ice to melt into water before damage occurs. Smallcomb also says that a warning sign of incoming moisture is "atmospheric rivers coming off the Pacific Ocean, which can be projected five to 10 days out," so keep your eye on the news and the social media accounts of the National Weather Service. If you want to know more about atmospheric rivers, our blog has an article on what to expect from them and what they have done in the past: Atmospheric Rivers in Reno. Our social media is a great resource for up-to-date information about the valley floor, over the hill, and lake-side weather changes. What Happens in a Wildfire Evacuation

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Wildfire evacuations sound stressful and frightening. Knowing where to go an what to bring is a battle all on its own-- not to mention what you are meant to be doing during one. SERVPRO is committed to making sure that the people we serve are armed with as much knowledge as possible so that they can safely return to their lives after the wildfire "Like it never even happened." The first thing that will happen is fire officials will recommend residents leave the area as soon as possible to avoid being caught in smoke or fire, and to lessen the danger on the road for emergency vehicles. This is a "voluntary evacuation order". If you don't leave right then, and the fire worsens, other emergency services like the police may order you and any of your household to leave the area, for your safety. This would be a "mandatory evacuation order". Either way, once you are clear of the area, there will be a designated assembly area where transportation to a safer location will be available. According to Readyforwildfire.org, there are three steps for when you return home that you should be aware of: WHEN YOU RETURN HOME: Be alert for downed power lines and other hazards. Check propane tanks, regulators, and lines before turning gas on. Check your residence carefully for hidden embers or smoldering fires. Do you have a wildfire story you want to tell? 12/6/2018 (Permalink)

The Short Answer: Thunderstorms and lightning are a dangerous force of nature, and more often than not in an arid climate like Nevada, it can cause fires, property damage, and road closures. The Long Answer: In the late months of 2017 there was an increase in lightning strike-related fires in the area.

According to Tim Brown of the Western Regional Climate Center, the wet conditions “create the fuels and [when] it dries out,” we see a lot more wildfires and property damage. Much of the issue with this weather can be attributed to moisture moving towards the north from the southwest, which gives way to warm and wet conditions that are perfect for thunderstorms and lightning. On Monday September 11th, in 2017, there were 2,519 lightning strikes in Nevada, “and 6,735 in California”, according to News Channel 4. And, according to News Channel 2, 2017’s fire season was “the worst in 15 years”.

90% of wildfires in Nevada are caused by humans, but in 2017, only 76% of 2017’s 272 wildfires were caused by people. While we may not get much rain and wet weather here, when we do it can be catastrophic. Storms here cause fires, property damage, and are very physically dangerous to you.

If your property has been damaged by stormy winds, lightning, or rain, SERVPRO has your back. We can make the damage “Like it never even happened”.

How To Lightning Proof Your House

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Be #LightningSafe by getting informed with SERVPRO on Twitter and Facebook

Here at SERVPRO, we take every measure we can to handle storm damage and destruction after it happens, but we can’t protect you in the moment; we’re faster to any size disaster, but being faster than lightning is a bit of a tall order!

Learn how to be #LightningSafe by following the tips below:

Ready.gov says that you should remove dead branches and rotting trees before storm season hits. This is because lightning looks for the shortest route to take to the ground; tall trees are a prime target, and, on top of that, they are flammable and can cause a house fire.

If that is something you’re worried about because you are surrounded by trees or just in an unusually dry area, check out our blog on Preventing Fires. “Shutter windows and secure outside doors.

If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.” This offers protection from wind, and an extra layer of home protection as well. Preventing electronics from frying while the storm outside is active is also important. Be sure to “Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives”.

BONUS TIP: “rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning.” If you are outside and start to feel static electricity in the air, seek shelter immediately; you cannot rely on your clothing. Ready.gov clarifies that “the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal”, which is good information to have. If you’re driving or near your vehicle during an impending storm, getting in might be the safest option, especially if there isn’t any other shelter nearby!

How Do I Waterproof My House?

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Waterproofing your home is essential to keeping everything important inside dry!

Waterproofing your home is essential to keeping everything important inside dry!

Fighting water damage starts before the first of our air movers ever even get to your home. Preventing water damage from water sources (pipes, hookups, etc) inside is an entirely different set of challenges, so we’ll focus on preventing water from outside getting inside in this article.

Making sure water doesn’t come in starts with the construction of your house. Check with your builder that a waterproof wrap is (or was!) used in the building of your new home. Popular brands include names like “Tyvek”. Additionally, when cold weather rolls in, icicles tend to form. We tend to leave them there because they are pretty, festive, and (let’s be honest) a bit of a hassle to go around and knock down. Those festive little spikes are one way moisture stays on the eaves of your home, soaking through the paint, wood, and potentially inside to your insulation and drywall.

This is especially common with attics. One of our pictures actually shows the process one homeowner had to go through with their house because of icicles being left on their roof.

If you want to avoid having to go through the same process, be sure to knock off icicles when you start to notice them. When it rains, one way we get moisture into our house is by leaving windows, sliding doors, or even (yes, really!) entryways open.

Even if you think your windows are shut and locked, there is probably a thin gap between your window and the frame, or your door and its jamb. To combat moisture getting in, consider properly weather stripping around these common areas.

Relatedly, going around the wall-edge of these areas with some thick caulk is a good way to reduce the amount of warmth lost when you use your heater.

Atmospheric Rivers in Reno and the Sierras

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Atmospheric Rivers in Reno

An atmospheric river is something we have to deal with on a fairly regular basis in Nevada.

An atmospheric river is a massive storm that dumps a large amount of water over an area, and according to News 4, they "get their name because when looking at them on satellite imagery, they look like large rivers in the sky. One storm can contain 15 times the amount of moisture as the mouth of the Mississippi River."

In the early months of 2017, and again back in 2013, the Reno and Sparks area saw significant flooding due to an atmospheric river, enough to require businesses and education facilities nearby to board up and use sandbags to prevent water and flooding damage.

Remember that just 12 inches of water can carry away an entire moving vehicle!

According to the National Weather Service: "flooding may even occur well away from where heavy rain initially fell. This is especially common in the western United States where low lying areas may be very dry one minute, and filled with rushing water from upstream the next."

Usually we are all pretty savvy when it comes to the weather around these parts, but more information is always better, and always helps you prepare and stay safer!

Holiday Cooking Gone Wrong

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

Holiday cooking can catch fire, cause smoke damage, and endanger a safe and fun holiday.

The holidays are peak timing for house fires and other accidents related to cooking.

A big reason for it is the fact that many people do not follow safety directions for their new cooking appliances (turkey fryers, for example) and they might not have the appropriate fire extinguisher for the job, either.

Here are some safety tips from the United States Fire Administration about home and cooking fires:

  • Turn pot handles towards the back of the stove to avoid bumping into them and spilling potentially flammable grease or alcohol onto the burners.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking and frying. Turning your back on the stove might give fire enough time to spread or become out of control.
  • In the case of an oven fire, provided that it is safe to do so, turn off the oven and keep the door closed until it is cooled off.

After all of that, contact SERVPRO to mitigate the damage done by holiday cooking gone wrong. We are always here to help.

Smoke, Soot, and My Home

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot can cause different types of damage; there are different kinds of fires, which makes for difficult cleaning. Luckily, you have SERVPRO!
Smoke, Soot, and Your Home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What To Do In A Flood

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

When water is damaging your home, does your fight or flight instinct kick in? No matter what the source of the water is, action in the initial moments can have a huge impact on the damage you sustain. Of all the priorities in those first seconds, none have the potential for irreversible harm, than those that ensure safety.

If you're like most people, your first thought during water damage is probably, "SHUT THE WATER OFF!"

Let's analyze this:
If you have to wade through water to shut it off, what hazards do you face?

  • Is the water contaminated?
  • Is there furniture or debris that could make you slip and fall?
  • Are there electrical shock hazards?
  • Is there more than 6 inches of water? (If there is, is it moving? If so, it is enough to knock a fully grown adult off their feet.)
  • Could there be water-dwelling wildlife just under the surface?

SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista's Water Damage Emergency Tips can help get you through those crucial steps in getting your home back, and making the flooding look "like it never even happened." Your safety in a flood is paramount!

What To Do During A Fire

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

What to Do During a Fire

Typically, when it comes to fires, an 'ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'. Find out how to prevent fires and be prepared for them by clicking through our blogs!

Unfortunately, not every fire is predictable. Fires can start because of lightning during storms, electrical surges, neighbors, or even just the dryness of the environment (something we have in abundance here in Nevada, especially during the winter!).

During a fire, many people panic. Not only does panicking make it much harder to organize yourself and others in an emergency, it also speeds up breathing--a potentially lethal mistake in a house or apartment fire. Smoke inhalation has “a 2-to-1 ratio of smoke inhalation to burns for fire deaths overall, while fire incident reports show an 8-to-1 ratio for home fire deaths,” according to the National Fire Protection Association. Remember the Triple S:  Keep your breathing Shallow, Slow, and Steady!

According to Ready.gov, what you should do if you find yourself in a fire is:

  • Crawl low under any smoke to your exit - heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling.
  • Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot, or if there is smoke coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your second way out.

  • If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is present.
  • If you can’t get to someone needing assistance, leave the home and call 9-1-1 or the fire department. Tell the emergency operator where the person is located.
  • If pets are trapped inside your home, tell firefighters right away.

  • If you can’t get out, close the door and cover vents and cracks around doors with cloth or tape to keep smoke out.  Call 9-1-1 or your fire department. Say where you are and signal for help at the window with a light-colored cloth or a flashlight.
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll – stop immediately, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands.  Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out.  If you or someone else cannot stop, drop, and roll, smother the flames with a blanket or towel.  Use cool water to treat the burn immediately for 3 to 5 minutes.  Cover with a clean, dry cloth.  Get medical help right away by calling 9-1-1 or the fire department.

Once everyone is safe, and the damage is done, call SERVPRO to restore your belongings and handle smoke left in clothing and furnishings. Fires can be devastating, so let SERVPRO make it "Like it never even happened."

Preventing Fires: Your Mission

Prevent fire from destroying your home!
Preventing Fires: Your Mission

You may have never had a fire before--and we certainly hope it stays that way!--but if you’re just putting your life back together after a fire loss, and want to make sure it never happens again, you have a mission to complete below:

Practice Your Escape Plan:

  • Make sure there are two exits from each room in case of emergency.
    • GET CREATIVE: A secondary route might be a window onto a neighboring roof or a collapsible ladder for escape from upper story windows. Craftiness saves lives.
  • Make sure that windows are not stuck, screens can be taken out quickly, and that security bars can be properly opened.
  • Practice feeling your way out of the house in the dark or with your eyes closed.
  • Teach children not to hide from firefighters.

If you are in a high-risk area for fire damage, you might be eligible for a free smoke alarm: the Red Cross is aiming to reduce 25% of deaths caused by fires by the year 2020. They may be able to install a free smoke alarm in your residence! Knowing that there IS a fire is the first step to being safe from burns and smoke inhalation.

  • Install both ionization AND photoelectric smoke alarms, OR dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors.
  • Test batteries monthly.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, both inside and outside of sleeping areas.
  • Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 8-10 years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking – it can be a deadly mistake.
  • There are also visual alarms for the hearing-impaired, and audible instruction alarms that will give directions aloud.

For their longer list of fire tips, visit Ready.gov.

SERVPRO will gladly handle the aftermath of a home or apartment fire--we know first hand how devastating the effects can be, that’s why we got into the restoration business. We want to see your property clean, undamaged, and smoke-free. If it isn’t currently looking like that’s the case, give us a call!

Hidden Water Damage: What It Does

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

House Smells After a Leak? Hidden Water Might Be to Blame. When water is hiding in the walls, let SERVPRO dry it out! Water and mold don't stand a cha
Hazards of Hidden Water After Water Damage
  • Imagine this: a pipe breaks, water jets out, filling your crawlspace. Now, imagine your irrigation malfunctions and begins to deposit gallons of water in your home. This water, assisted by gravity and capillary action can quickly spread throughout your structure giving mold the moisture it needs to get a foothold and grow.
  • Gravity, of course, pulls the water down through your house affecting everything in its path. Capillary action, on the other hand, pulls water up behind cabinets, into the drywall and wall cavities.  Both of these actions work together to create one of the biggest hazards in water damages: water you cannot see.  This unseen water left untreated is a main factor in microbial and mold growth.
  • SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista has the tools and experience to not only find this dangerous hidden moisture, but also remove it, making your water damage, "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista - Experts on Mold

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to water damage and mold SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista are your experts.
Mold 101: 3 Steps to Understanding Mold

First: Mold is part of the environment, and plays an important part of our ecosystem.  Without it, we would not have the antibiotic penicillin, garbage and old food would never decay, and neither would all the leaves that fall off during autumn time! (Can you imagine the mess?)

Certain types of cheese even rely on mold for their flavor (that’s right, your favorite blue cheese? That’s mold. Really tasty mold). Mold breaks down dead plant and animal material, returning useful nutrients to the soil.

Second: But mold in your home or business can be a dangerous problem. The problem occurs when water damage supplies mold with the moisture it needs to colonize inside structures. Elevated mold spore counts can cause adverse health effects on otherwise healthy people. It is always better to check with professionals than to attempt remediation yourself!

Third: Call SERVPRO of Reno NW/Truckee/Tahoe Vista if you suspect you have a mold problem. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Displaced Wildlife and Animals in Your Home

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

"Only you can prevent wildfires--but only I can destroy a home with my BEAR hands!"

It's not nearly as uncommon as we'd like to think! Bear break-ins are a serious matter and can leave your home, office, vehicle or other property looking like a tornado tore through it. Local bears have a motivation for calories--especially in the winter, up to 20,000 calories in a day!--that can lead them to view your dwelling as a prime opportunity to locate food.

Most homes are no match for a bear's incredible strength and intelligence. They are adept at gaining access to a home by whatever means necessary. The amount of destruction they can cause while in your home is astonishing.

Cabinets, refrigerators, microwaves and any other place a bear thinks may contain food are easily dispatched, causing extensive damage to your home and furnishings.

Customers have remarked that it looks as if rooms have exploded. Finding your home damaged by a bear is a traumatic experience. SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista has the skill, equipment and experience to deal with the damage left behind by a bear's rampage.

Boarding up the exterior damage where the bear gained access, deep cleaning of the debris left behind and rebuilding the damaged areas are all services SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista can perform to make your home "Like it never even happened."

Mold: A Crash Course

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

What are the basics of mold? SERVPRO professionals have you covered!
Mold: A Crash Course

Below are a few quick bullet points for those short on time, but need immediate quick-facts about mold:

  • Mold spores are everywhere, and just because you don't see them growing on any surface, doesn't mean they aren't in the air. And that's not a bad thing! We need mold to make sure things decompose.

According to the CDC, the kinds of places that are at risk of mold growth include:

  • Antique shops
  • Greenhouses
  • Saunas
  • Farms
  • Mills
  • Construction areas
  • Flower shops
  • Summer cottages
  • Be sure that each spring and fall you check windows, dusty cupboards, and indoor plant soil for mold.
  • If you keep the humidity in your business below 50%, and ventilate the space to the best of your ability, you may be able to prevent mold growth.

  • If you cannot prevent the mold, and it is becoming a problem, call SERVPRO to come out for an estimate. We are mold remediation experts and can handle any mold issue, at any time.

Pet Odor Prevention (A.K.A: How to Dog-Proof Your Home)

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

It’s all about getting the tools you need. It is not always easy to plan around a new dog, even if you have one already. For me, having just moved into my new house and finally--finally--setting up the decor the way I wanted, structuring and incorporating dog-friendly items seemed a little daunting.

As a go-getter and avid do-it-yourself-er, I decided to do something about being overwhelmed and make this list:

First, we have a rabbit who loves her space and play areas. Getting her ready for our new family member is one of the most important steps; don’t forget about the animals you ALREADY made a commitment to while shopping for your newest addition!

For her we got this fabulous hutch with two stories so she can have her own private space and feel safe. [It’s bad animal ownership to have your prey and predator animals in the same living areas, as it stresses the more delicate of the two and can distract your dog away from their training.]

Alright, so that one wasn’t REALLY for our new dog, but this panel is. This little gate (smaller size) is supposed to section off your home’s less-than-pet-friendly areas. To discourage begging for scraps, we placed these at the entrances to our kitchen. If we had stairs, these would be an awesome addition at the landings!

If yours is a messy eater or drinker, get serious about correcting it with one of these neat feeders. I get calls at SERVPRO all the time about how there “wasn’t a leak but there’s mold growing next to my cabinets on the floor”. Standing water (yes, even from a pet-dish) that dries on wood cabinets, drywall, wallpaper--any porous surface--will provide the necessary moisture to grow mold. If you’re already there, call the professionals at SERVPRO so your pet can eat in peace.

While you’re at it, one of these silicone mats would keep the water and food off your floors too, and they wipe clean with a rag and some cleaner.

Tripping hazards abound any dog-having home, but I swore mine would be different. These collapsable boxes make cleaning up after playtime a cinch; I put all of her chew toys in one, her shoes, extra collar and her three leashes in the other. They’re also a more aesthetic replacement for the boxes housebreaking-pads come in, if yours is a fashion-forward-Fido.

Breakfast time doesn’t have to look gourmet, but it should be stored well in something like these airtight containers. There are a lot of field mice and other pests in the Reno area (the entire valley region really), and no one wants mice or ants in their pantry. Prevention is better than the cure on this one, trust me; SERVPRO has been called out to numerous pest-droppings related jobs and one way to secure your living space is to secure the food inside it.

The thing I was most nervous about when getting a dog was going to be the carpets. Luckily, ours is an older dog and can hold her bladder really well--but that doesn’t mean I want her inside all the time. This dog-door is the perfect solution for those long hours at work, waiting to come back to your fluffy friend.

These dog-training potty pads are great for those of you who are a little less confident in your pet’s bladder than I am. On the off-chance your pet doesn’t make it to the pad or out the door in time, SERVPRO remediates pet odor professionally and can help if pet odor is becoming a problem.

The next thing on our list was this precious dog house for the backyard on warm afternoons. We keep our pooch inside most of the time, so if you’re an outdoor-pets kind of person you might want something more substantial to keep your pet safe from the elements--especially coyotes!

I cannot stress this enough; I like walking my dog, and I hate tracking other dogs’ feces anywhere. If you take nothing else from this whole article, make it these earth-friendly rolls of doggy-doo bags and gift some to your neighbors with pets. There’s 720 bags in there, and no excuses left.

Walking is awesome but if your pet is jumping around on the concrete that means their feet are either hot or too cold. Dogs’ feet are sensitive, and these little booties can extend quality exercise time. Added bonus: If you can’t wash your dog’s feet after a walk, that’s fine! Just take the shoes off and wipe those down instead.

Just in case a wet-nosed someone does roll around in something unsavory, this 6-in-1 grooming kit and soap work wonders on our dog. I figured I wouldn’t need anything too high end for grooming supplies, but as time goes on I’ll find out for sure. Pet nails are a nightmare for hardwood floors, don’t let them get crazy. If you have to, think about these nail caps for dogs.

At the end of our walk, it’s time to settle in. In the master bedroom our fluffy anklebiter gets to hunker down in this memory foam pet bed. We know. We treat her good.

Testing for Mold - Forget the Home Tests, Use an Industrial Hygenist

6/29/2018 (Permalink)

Picture of grey green mold spores under a microscope Microscopic Mold Spores that an Industrial Hygenist is best to test for their presence. Skip the home tests and call the professionals at SERVPRO.

You've heard all about the fear surrounding mold, and maybe you're considering a home mold test to find out if there is something harmful about the blue or green fuzz growing in your home.

SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista says you can skip the home test and if needed hire a professional, why?

Because the CDC states that “generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and [the] CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds.”

Testing, to be accurate, should be done by an Industrial Hygienist (IH). These professionals have the ability to test in a manner that gives an accurate representation of the environment inside the structure. Clearance testing after mitigation should also be a part of the protocol to confirm the effectiveness of the mitigation.

Why Doesn't SERVPRO Test For Mold?

Testing not performed by the mitigation company handling the work adds a level of accountability to the project, avoids a conflict of interest, and ensures the building owner of properly mitigated mold damage.

SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista is committed to properly remediating any mold damage in your home, making it, “Like it never even happened.”

Crawlspaces: What Are They, Why Do They Matter?

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Maintaining your crawlspace is essential to responsible homeownership!

Crawl Spaces in the Truckee / Tahoe Area

The vast majority of homes in the Sierra Nevada are built on crawlspaces.  The unique topography of these mountains can create issues for our homes.  Snow load, water runoff, and rising water tables need to be dealt with to maintain your property.

If maintained properly, crawlspaces have advantages over other types of construction.

  • It gets the house above the ground, an important point in damp areas.
  • It is less expensive than a basement, and comparable to the price of a slab foundation.
  • Duct work, plumbing, and electrical can run in the crawl space, which makes them easier to service, and move if necessary.

Proper crawl space maintenance begins outside your home

  • Adequate drainage on your property, keeps water away from your foundation.
    • Re-evaluate your landscaping to keep heavy snows from forcing water under your home
    • Rising water tables could necessitate a sump pump system to divert water from your crawlspace.
  • Building codes typically require a minimum of 6” fall in ground level; over a distance of 10 feet from the perimeter of the building. Depending on the topography of your property in this area, this may not be adequate.
    • In addition, inspect for the following:
      • Depressions that collect ground water near the house.
      • Off-site surface water that flows onto the property.
      • Inadequate building offset from adjacent steep slopes, which generate increased surface water run-off.
      • Malfunctioning downspouts or improper downspout installation.

Crawlspaces can be either ventilated or unventilated

  • Ventilated crawlspaces should have:
    • A minimum of 1 square foot of venting for every 150 square feet of crawlspace area.
    • Plastic sheeting covering the entire crawlspace, with proper overlap, for effectively controlling ground moisture.
  • Unventilated crawlspaces require:
    • Seals to prevent air leakage between outdoor air and the crawlspace.
    • Damp-proofed and insulated perimeter walls.
    • Plastic sheeting covering the entire crawlspace, with proper overlap, for effectively controlling ground moisture.

Periodic inspections of your crawlspace are recommended.

Items to inspect for are:

  • Standing water on top of vapor barrier.
  • Condensation or leaks on water pipes or ductwork.
  • Muddy soil.
  • Staining on walls from water or efflorescence.
  • Sagging or missing insulation.
  • Plumbing leaks.

SERVPRO Featured in CATT Magazine: Mold Expert Talks Household Mold

6/7/2018 (Permalink)

The published article from CATT.

The following article appeared in the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe's Building and Remodeling Guide of 2018-2019. The article was written by Rick Malone and edited by Andi Figueroa. It appears below and in its magazine-published form as the accompanying image.

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, sensationalized stories brought mold into public consciousness.  Several unsubstantiated claims caused an upheaval of panicked health discussions. Now, even though the dust of that time has subsided, misunderstandings about mold are still present.

To demystify the fears surrounding both mold and what conditions mold needs to grow, Rick Malone, who holds advanced certifications from the IICRC and is a MICRO Certified Mold Inspector, gave the following interview as a trusted professional at SERVPRO of Reno Northwest / Truckee / Tahoe Vista.

“Mold is part of the environment”, Rick says, “it plays an important role in our ecosystem. Without it, biological matter would not decay.  For example, if mold did not help break down fallen trees and leaves, their nutrients would not readily return to the soil.”

Active mold growth in the home is a different matter.  While homes are built to reduce the chance of mold infestations, totally eliminating mold spores in the home is not always feasible. According to the IICRC’s Standard For Professional Mold Remediation Handbook1, normal fungal ecology is considered “...an indoor environment that may have settled spores.”1  However, active mold growth in your home or business is not considered “normal fungal ecology”, Rick says.

Given the right environment, mold can grow and colonize.  “One factor that attributes to active mold growth is the presence of water,” Rick explained, “In essence: if you have a mold problem, you have a water problem.”  Water intrusion supplies settled mold spores the moisture they need to grow and thrive in your home. “It doesn’t matter if the water comes from internal sources such as plumbing”, he said, “or external sources like groundwater or roof leaks”.  When mold is discovered, the first step to take is to identify and remove the cause, then, properly remediate the mold in a way that does not contaminate the entire structure.

Health hazards are almost always a concern when SERVPRO is contacted to conduct mold inspections and remediation. Rick explained that the CDC’s page2 on mold (cdc.gov/mold) is the best authority to answer those health concerns: “The CDC has well-researched information to help homeowners gain a realistic understanding of the threats of mold.”

Top indicators of active mold growth to look for include: musty odors; “if you smell mold, chances are you have active mold growth” he says, and signs of water intrusion; “such as condensation, leaks, or water staining on walls and ceilings”.  If you are concerned about mold in your home or business, call SERVPRO at 775-827-9944 or request help online at www.SERVPROrenonwtruckeetahoevista.com/fnol.

TAHOE VISTA: Commercial Building Restoration

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

Tahoe living has its own unique challenges when it comes to flooding and fire damage. We talk a lot about how Reno is prone to flooding because of the snowmelt, but during the change of the seasons, the snow melts into the Tahoe and Truckee areas first before it can get to Reno in the first place! Employees track in water and mud from outside, wind ushers in dead leaves and debris, and the carpets absorb all the detritus you can’t see.

“Having a clean and respectable workplace will not only enhance your professional reputation amongst visitors, but it will also build your morale from within, which will then ensure that your employees feel valued and cared for.” - Chris Valentine, Odd Culture

Many of our clients in the Tahoe area have taken steps with SERVPRO of Reno NW Truckee / Tahoe Vista to stop the growth of mold in their office spaces; we do remediate mold as well, but drying out the area BEFORE mold can start growing is essential for the health of the office, and the financials of it. Places like Eagle Peak Herbals, WP Property Management, Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative, and Realty World Lassen are taking advantage of our being “Faster to any size disaster” promise, and are enjoying the benefits of clean offices and working spaces.

We are firm believers that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; don’t wait until you see or smell mold. Instead, call the professionals at SERVPRO when mold-growing conditions like humidity and water damage infiltrate your workplace.

Getting Your Commercial Building or Office Space Cleaned: Is it Worth it?

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

INC.com says that you shouldn’t “leave it up to the night cleaning crew to take care of your office. They will probably empty your trash and vacuum, but I assure you that detailed cleaning is not going to happen.” They later go on to say that the way to go about cleaning your office starts with you. So...

What’s Wrong With an Unclean Office Space?

  1. Clients and customers’ first impressions impact reviews and their willingness to use a company’s products or services again in the future. If it's messy, stained, damaged, or smells off, you are not getting the best impression possible.

  2. Healthy employees mean productive employees! In general, people prefer where they work to be clean and free of distracting messes, “When your employees are satisfied, engagement levels rise, and your corporate culture is positively impacted,” according to Action Clean Up.

  3. Maintenance: after a storm or unusual amount of rain, humidity rises indoors as well. Office equipment like copiers, fax machines, computers and other electronics run the risk of damage if humidity or water comes into contact with their working parts.

  4. Also from Action Clean Up: “Other important assets like floor tiles, carpets, and furnishings should be cleaned regularly to maintain their beauty and extend their useful life. Hard surface floors should have an even gloss, free of scuffs and black marks. Carpets need to be vacuumed frequently and should be free of spots and stains.”

While SERVPRO thinks regular office space cleaning is a basic responsibility of all movers and shakers, you’ve got a business to run, and spending time on deep cleanup is a waste! Let SERVPRO of Reno NW / Truckee / Tahoe Vista handle the deep cleaning of your workspace, so you can get back to business.

Bottom Line?

Getting cleaned up and ready to rock the business world is absolutely worth it. It makes you and your business look like the professionals you are, keeps employees and customers happy, and prolongs the life of business assets (be they electronic or not) after weather events. Give SERVPRO a call; you'll be glad you did.

Can’t Get Over The Pass: What To Do in Truckee/Tahoe

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

It is that time of year when there just isn’t enough powder to ski and snowboard, but just too much to make driving back into town unsafe. Take it from the people who routinely take work in the Truckee / Tahoe Vista area; there are tons of things to do until road conditions get better!

  • Movies in Tahoe: Tahoe is an amazing hub of constant creativity and art. Diamond Peak shows local flicks for those days where you’re stuck in Tahoe because of road conditions.

  • According to Reno.com: “Even if the snow isn’t falling, temperatures can still be conducive to keeping things icy. Heavenly Village and the Village at Northstar both feature ice-skating rinks that provide a winter wonderland feel, even without the powder.”

  • Rest + Recover: If you’re feeling a little unwell for the altitude, there is a spa specifically for your ailments inside the Hyatt.

Is It Black Mold?

1/10/2018 (Permalink)

#MoldRemediation starts by treating all molds exactly the same.

"Black Mold"-- the term conjures up images of hazardous material suits, apocalypse, and hospital beds. But what do we really have to be afraid of?

Black mold is a loose term, usually referring to the strain of mold called Stachybotrys chartarum, which--like many molds--produces mycotoxins, which can cause allergic reactions.

The Center for Disease Control says that "the common health concerns from molds include hay fever-like allergic symptoms. Certain individuals with chronic respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, asthma) may experience difficulty breathing."

I see mold that is black in my home or office--is it Stachybotrys chartarum?

Without a mold test, it is impossible to tell. What you should know, however, is that a mold's color is dependent on a host of things, including the food source. Additionally, the colors vary by region. In the Amazon, mold is mostly orange. In the United States mold can be blue, green, white, soft yellow, et cetera. Mold's colors protect it from damage and offers a shield from the sun, other species of mold, and more as well.

So not all mold that is black is Stachybotrys Chartarum, but all mold should be removed. Which means that it really doesn't matter what kind of mold you have.

What do you mean it doesn't matter what kind of mold I have?

Well, all mold should be treated with care and personal protective equipment should be used when removing it.

Additionally, the Center for Disease Control states that "hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins [like Stachybotrys Chartarum] should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house," and goes on to say that "It is not necessary, however, to determine what type of mold you may have. All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal."

Humidifiers: The Downside

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Winters are so dry in the Silver State, and in Northern California! Many of us turn to humidifiers to deal with dry sinuses, cold and flu season, or to avoid dry skin and related problems. Unfortunately, any time we write about water at SERVPRO, it means there’s about to be damage involved.

Too much humidity can cause mold to grow near a humidifier, or in a particularly humid room. That’s why we suggest turning on the bathroom fan when you take a shower, and using the fans over the stove (if you have a hood in your kitchen) while cooking.

Too little, and furniture, wood, and flooring can crack as they become robbed of moisture. You also get robbed of moisture, as dry air makes your body feel colder-- meaning you probably think of reaching for the thermostat or a space heater to keep warm. Not only are space heaters and turning up the thermostat expensive, but space heaters are one of the leading reasons for house fires, especially if you’re leaving them running for extended periods of time.

Managing the humidity in your home can save you from having to remediate mold, fire damage, and property destruction.

When it is ten to twenty degrees (Fahrenheit) outside, your home’s humidity should not exceed 35%. For every ten degree drop in temperature, subtract 5%; so, if it is zero to 10 degrees outside, 30% humidity is the highest you should have in your home.

How Do I Stop a Broken Pipe From Flooding My House?

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

We hear it all the time when winter storms hit: "Temperatures dropped, winds battered my house, and now a pipe is leaking all over my floors! What do I do?"

It’s a good question! Despite all the waterproofing trouble you went to for the outside of your house, water still comes in. Sometimes the pipe bursts while you’re around, and you have some time to fix it before it gets worse. Other times, our pipes can be less than that forgiving. For when you have the time and are nearby enough to stop the busted pipe, here are some things you should do:

  1. Turn off the water! Provided getting yourself to the main shutoff valve doesn’t pose any dangers to yourself or anyone else, turning off the source of the water is going to be the biggest step in reducing the amount of water damage to your home.
  2. Apply a pipe connector! Having a couple of these on hand is useful for this scenario. Rubber pipe connectors will help stop any residual leakage after you’ve turned the water off. You would usually use these on the joint or near the middle. You may need to fit them properly to the pipe itself, so if you aren’t handy or are just starting out, move on to #3.
  3. Pipe wraps! These were made for the horror story of the burst pipe. You can find a pipe wrap at almost any home improvement retailer, and just need to place it according to the package instructions. These are pretty universal and versatile as they can go anywhere on the pipe for any kind of burst.

After you’ve stopped the leakage to the best of your ability, you should give your plumber a call to fix the pipe.

After that, your best bet is to call SERVPRO: drying out your house after a flood or leak is our forte.

Why Use Professionals for Mold and Mildew?

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic Mold Spore Simulated Mold Spores

BACKGROUND: Mold grows in filaments called “hyphae”, and a network of these hyphae are called a “mycelium”. The "hyphal tip" is the part that eats bacteria.

Mildewcides work by killing the bacteria that the mold’s hyphal tip absorbs. What does that mean, exactly? Mildewcides first stop the growth of mold by preventing there from being a food source (the bacteria).

With regards to mildewcides in paints, those will prevent the growth of mildew and mold, but won’t stop or kill existing mold necessarily, so it is important to have your walls treated and washed BEFORE applying this kind of paint. (Don’t know how to treat your walls for such a project? That’s where SERVPRO comes in!)

There is a crash course in mold on our blog if you want to arm yourself with even more knowledge.

But what about existing mold? Well, if the mold is growing on a non-porous surface (think linoleum), the mildewcide will kill the mold, and when it’s removed, you don’t have to worry about regrowth. It is only on non-porous surfaces that bleach can be used as a mildewcide; for any other surfaces, professional-grade equipment and solutions are the standard.

On a porous surface (think wood) the roots of the hyphae are deeper inside, which means spraying and removing it won’t be as effective, and regrowth is a possibility. Letting a treatment sit over a period of time will discourage mold growth, and kill the roots of the mold inside the structure.

If you suspect a mold issue, let our skilled team of professionals at SERVPRO know. You can tell us online, by phone, or even on Twitter if you direct message us!
